Countdown to Election Day: Congressman Renacci's All-Male Country Club Membership
October 16, 2018
With just three weeks to go until Election Day, we’re taking a look back at the lowlights of Congressman Jim Renacci’s Senate bid – a campaign that’s been defined by embarrassing stories, despicable lows, and complaints from Republicans that he never “even picked up the towel.”
We’re kicking it off today with Congressman Renacci’s membership to an all-male country club. Be sure to follow along over the next three weeks as we count down to the end of Congressman Renacci’s pathetic political career.
In 2016, Congressman Renacci hosted a men-only fundraiser at an all-male country club he belonged to. When advertising the fundraiser, which cost $1,500 per man, Congressman Renacci touted the country club’s “strictly male appeal.”
When the issue was raised back in March, Congressman Renacci said he was no longer a member of the club, but refused to return the donations he received at the all-male fundraiser, or provide answers as to when he gave up his club membership.
Take a look at some of the coverage from the time:

When people refer to political “boys’ clubs” they’re usually speaking metaphorically. Not this time. Next week, Ohio Rep. Jim Renacci is hosting a fundraiser next week at the men-only Sharon Golf Club, reports Politico. The publication references an email sent to donors by Renacci’s chief of staff Surya Gunasekara that highlights the “fine, new course and a clubhouse that has strictly male appeal.” The price to attend the exclusionary event is $3,000 for PACs and $1,500 for (male) individuals, according to Politico.
From Politico Playbook:
DEPT. OF ‘YA CAN’T MAKE IT UP!’ – Ohio Rep. Jim Renacci is hosting a high-dollar fundraiser next week at a men’s-only country club. The event - $3,000 for PACs and $1,500 for individuals - will be held at the prestigious “male-only” Sharon Country Club. Renacci’s chief of staff Surya Gunasekara emailed donors highlighting the course’s single-sex status with links to a historical document detailing how “Sharon’s founders spared no expense in producing this fine, new course and a clubhouse that has strictly male appeal.” He also linked to a 2012 story where Renacci’s Democratic opponent attacked him for his membership at the club. Renacci’s team isn’t backing away from the affiliation – they’re embracing it. Renacci spokeswoman Lizzie Litzow said that the lawmaker’s Sharon membership has been “well documented” and has been the “target of endless hypocritical and ridiculous attacks from the far left.”
